Probate records in Vermont are kept by Probate Districts. They sometimes share the name of the county. The are two probate districts in Orange County, one covering the eastern part of the county and one the western
One is called Orange and the other Randolph. Bennington has two districts (Bennington and Manchester), Rutland has two (Rutland and Fair Haven), Windham has two (Marlboro and Westminster) and Windsor has two (Windsor and Hartford). The rest of the districts follow the county lines. Addison used to be have two districts, but they merged in 1962. Anyone doing probate research in Vermont had better get a good grasp of what these districts cover. If you check the Orange District records and not the Randolph District records, you missed half of the probate records in Orange County. Land records are with the towns. However, there are some unincorporated areas and these records are held by the county. There are also county courts that hold records. The Red Book is a good resource.
