Women did not apply for naturalization for a very simple reason. Under US
law, a wife was automatically the citizen of what ever country her husband
was. In fact this is how a number of native born American women lost their
citizenship. They married a non US citizen. Sometime in the early 20's I
believe, the law was changed to this did not automatically happen and then sometime
later, the law changed and both the man and women had to apply to become
citizens. A special application was created that allowed native born US women to
apply to regain their American citizenship. Minor children were
automatically citizens once their father became one.
