And here's the rest of the story.....
The following year Lars and his papa Ole decided to go to the Old Country by
airplane. When they got to the airport there were three lines: one was for
regular travelers and it was very, very long; the second was for folks who
had "not" been "profiled" but were told they had to go though extra security
anyway. When the ticket agent checked Lars' and Ole's tickets she directed
them to the third line, which was labeled "Norway Only", and had no
searchers and no waiting!
Once on board they asked the flight attendant why their line was so short
and so quick? She replied that if they had to ask they must be Norwegian,
and continued with her duties. So Lars and Ole were happy all the way to
Oslo. When they finally set foot on the homeland they were surrounded by
people saying "Velkomen!" So Lars said to his papa, "Ve better talk dis vay
so ve are not lookin' like tourists, and don't get robbed."
For three days Lars and Ole took in the sights. They explored the fjords,
went on reindeer rides, and each bought a new metal hat with horns on the
side. They choked down lutefisk and made sandwiches out of lefse. They
absorbed some of the culture and learned the history of the 14 Day War,
which was fought against Sweden in 1814 and was the reason why, to this day,
the worst thing you could say to a person was to call him a Swede.
On the fourth day they went to the Hall of Records to study their family
history. They were directed to the desk of Lena the Librarian (a very
ancient woman) who was the most famous genealogist in the country (however,
not a member of APG.) Lars said, "Ve are Ole and Lars Torkelson, father and
son from Amerika, and ve vant to trace our roots." Lena first looked at
Lars and then looked at Ole. She said to Ole, "Vel, who vas your papa?"
Ole, who preferred to let Lars to the talking, became nervous and turned red
in the face, "Uff-da!", he said, "He vas alvays gone ven da census taker
come so he vasn't around much ven I vas growin' up. All I know about my papa
vas dat he had very red hair and mamma called him Erik."
Lena the Librarian gasped, she saw the resemblance and knew this was the son
of the very Erik Torkelson who had left her at the Alter nearly sixty years
ago. Infuriated Lena stood up from her desk and said, "Erik the red headed
Torkelson? Dat damn Svede?!"
So Lars and Ole left to expand their research in Sweden....
Kate - Good day!
