I knew I forgot something. The MLS AHIP program also gives points for
conference attendance - local, regional, national, etc.

I agree, Carolyn, about avoiding the term "continuing education credits",
although I think the generic term "continuing education" is fine when one is
talking about renewal memberships after one is already a member. Right now I
think we are focusing on how to qualify initially for full membership based
on our activity in the field.

I also agree with you that two categories are plenty: Associate Member, and
Member. (The only possible third category I could see would be a student
membership for those enrolled full time in school.) I think that the
distinction could be kept fairly simple. Associate membership would be the
same as current membership. One pays dues and signs the agreement. Thus the
organization stays inclusive to all. To have full membership and be listed
in the online directory, one would submit a simple list of qualifications
(education and experience) that met or exceeded a predetermined value. We
would want to keep the "menu" of options broad in order to be inclusive of
the many ways we gain experience and expertise in this field. We might want
an "other" category, so that folks could submit alternatives if their
experience was different from what was listed. Having a mentor might be one
option, especially for those whose experience falls into an "other"
category. Whatever changes are !
eventua
lly decided upon, there should be a fairly long roll-out period, so everyone
has time to meet the criteria if they wish.

I wonder if attendance at genealogy conferences and membership in historical
societies might increase if this activity was recognized and rewarded by
APG?
