Personally, I think it should be the other way around. I know that sounds sassy, and it probably is, and I'm probably going to catch **** from my betters, but honestly being a part of the APG has done so much for my personal growth and development as a genealogist that it would just not be right for me to deny others the same opportunity. When I first joined APG I brought 10 years of top-notch business experience to the table and a whole lot of bad source citation. But the Q, the PMC, and networking with fellow professionals who made me feel accepted and wanted has made all the difference. According to the proposed structure, people like me would be made to feel like second class citizens in APG and nobody wants to stick around in that kind of club. Thanks to APG, thankfully I actually would now qualify under Dr. Jones proposed structure, so you could say that I don't really have a dog in the fight anymore. But that's not really the point. The point is that I couldn't do it alone. And I don't want anyone else to feel like they have to. Again, I say, let's find out why change is needed and if restructuring the membership is really the right tactic for the mission.
To all of us who may share Julia's doubts, I say let's gang up and hang in there together. We're not outcast yet. We can pull together and make APG a place to grow and improve our professional skills no matter where we are, how much we make, or whether or not there are any letters behind our names. The proof is in our product. Let's get out there and do some good professional genealogy.
