It would be simple to add a field called "Professional Credentials" with a drop-down menu
listing them to the "Directory Advanced Search" page at
http://www.apgen.org/directory/search.html .

It's hard to argue against a student category, although it's probably not as
badly needed as in other large professions where passage through a full-time
post-secondary program is part of the normal progression toward professional
status.

Distinguishing between "Certified Members" and ordinary members seems
unnecessary. Individuals holding certifications or accreditations can already
indicate so in your profiles. It doesn't make sense to vary dues between
certified and non-certified individuals. Not all board-certified genealogists are
professionals (in the fee-for-service sense), and not all professionals
(again, in the fee-for-service sense) are board-certified.

am not at all certain that tiers are needed, but, if
so, how about self selecting as either:
1. Member
2.(BCG) Certified member
3. Student member

With a price break only for full time students.

CG (Certified Genealogist) is a service mark of the Board for Certification
of Genealogists, used under license by Board-certified associates after
periodic competency evaluations.
