Actually, if you browse through the collection of photos here,
you'll see that the "calico wagon" was not limited to the prairie
schooner type of wagon. There are a calico water wagon, calico delivery
wagon, calico hearse, etc., all with larger rear wheels. Thus, "calico
wagon" appears to be a generic term for wagons produced in the Calico
area with larger rear wheels. In modern times, the use of the term may
have expanded from wagons from that geographical area to any wagons with
uneven wheels. There is probably some advantage to that particular
design. I'll leave it to the more engineering-minded to figure out what
that may be.
