Thank you, Elizabeth, for mentioning John Rehder's book. Since I was
born in the Appalachians myself, it sounded interesting enough to
justify searching for a more detailed description. Apparently
"Appalachian Folkways" has Limited Preview status at Google Books.
I've spent the last little while reading the first ten pages when I
meant to look only at the table of contents. Here's a link to the
