Yup, the galvanized tubs filled with cold and hot water, a hand-cranked roller-wringer type thing (dang! can't remember the name of it). I didn't "carry" - I toted and was happy to do it for my grandma :) She was great!

Scrub boards and lye soap were the norm. She washed my hair in powdered Tide. Madison County AL holds a lot of old-fashioned memories for me - good, bad or ugly.

Had an aunt that lived in the "holler" with well water and a crick and the water itself was ice cold and fun to play in. It was the clearest water I've ever seen (except for the water in the lake behind Neuschwannstein). Learned what a water skeeter was there and how to shoot a BB Gun. Shotguns came later.

Amazing how we, who lived in similar areas of the country, have slightly different views on the world as we knew it then. I certainly learn a lot from this particular board whether it be about research, history or any of the APG discussions (as it relates to the entity itself).

Growing up on a farm in the Mississippi Delta, across the river from
Carolyn's great state (the one we used to refer to as TGFA--Thank God for
Arkansas :), I was a long way from a creek and the only crick around was the
one I got in my neck from carrying the bucket of water I'd just pumped from
the artesian well.

And, yes, I did *carry* it. I didn't *tote* it, like folks in Northeastern
Alabama. But never, in the Mississippi Delta, did I *warsh* something, not
even when I used a wash tub and a rub-board. In case anybody's interested, I
also used that old galvenized wash tub for a cooler on hot days, but I
didn't fill it with bottles of pop or soda. I put it under the pump, filled
it with water from the well (water, not warter), and then lolled in it with
my pet duck.
