The first time I heard carry used other than to pick up something in your
arms was in San Francisco about 1972. I was born and raised in California. My
grand mother had a friend who was born and raised in Mississippi but then
living in San Francisco. She called and asked if I"could carry her to the
doctor's" I got very excited and asked if she was badly hurt and should I call
an ambulance. She was puzzled and said no she was just going for some shot.
I replied but why do I need to carry you can't you walk. She laughed and
realized my mistake.
However, I have always said Warsh. for both the cleaning and the state,
Warshington. Interestingly my sister does not. Don;t know where I picked it
up. My sister however has always used li-berry instead of library. Drove my
mother crazy.

Growing up on a farm in the Mississippi Delta, across the river from
Carolyn's great state (the one we used to refer to as TGFA--Thank God for
Arkansas :), I was a long way from a creek and the only crick around was the
one I got in my neck from carrying the bucket of water I'd just pumped from
the artesian well.
And, yes, I did *carry* it. I didn't *tote* it, like folks in Northeastern
Alabama. But never, in the Mississippi Delta, did I *warsh* something, not
even when I used a wash tub and a rub-board. In case anybody's interested, I
also used that old galvenized wash tub for a cooler on hot days, but I
didn't fill it with bottles of pop or soda. I put it under the pump, filled
it with water from the well (water, not warter), and then lolled in it with
my pet duck.
