When I lived in Bayshore, Long Island, we would say we were "going into the
city" if we were going to Manhattan.
When living in Rockville, Maryland, when speaking of a trip to the
national's capitol, we'd say we're "going into the District."
In Medina, a suburb of Seattle, we say we are "going downtown" or "going to
town".
However, when my grandson made "quick work" of eating his share of the
birthday cake -- we said "he is really going to town."
