Have you thought of working virtually as a volunteer? In the past NEHGS has
had transcription done at home by volunteers, GenealogyToday.com utilizes
transcriptionists who work from home as does {did?} JewishGen. If you
cannot find something, how about exploring the genealogically significant
collections in your area - is there something that hasn't been
indexed/transcribed/written about that could be? Are there any small local
cemeteries that need transcribing or photographing for a website? Maybe you
need to find a project of your own. Do you like to write? How about
volunteering to write columns for a genealogical society's newsletter? I
know as an editor myself, we are always looking for columnists that can
contribute well-documented, well-written articles for publication.
I would try a local society - or several local societies and maybe a few
that are not so local but can support virtual help. My experience has been
that they always have projects that are needing to be done. That being
said, it is also important to find the right fit with the right group. That
may take a few tries, but once you find the right fit it's a great thing.
Good luck,

I certain understand about the difficulties of volunteering when your
schedule is full but I also believe that if you want something bad enough
there is a way to make it happen.
For the record I have four children ranging in ages from 5 to 17, am a full
time (plus) student finishing up a master's degree and a second bachelor's
degree with plans to go on for my Ph.D., work part time (sometimes full
time) at my own business, and I volunteer for many different activities in
the genealogy community ranging from coordinating conferences, to helping
within my local APG chapter, to activities for NGS, etc.
If there is a will there is a way. <grin>

I would love to be able to volunteer however that's not easy when you work
full time and have a family. Nevertheless I've even tried to volunteer my
time at the Queens Historical Society that isn't far from my home and I'm
still waiting to hear from the person in charge. It's going on months since
I was told that my contact information was left for the person. Anyone have
any ideas for something local to Queens? Is there anything going on in the
evenings or the weekend in Manhattan?
Thanks for any advise.
Phil
