I finally finished catching up on the APG emails of the last week. These are
some thoughts on using the IGI and other databases at familysearch.org.
First, before I go to familysearch.org, I do a thorough census search of the
family and then check out rootsweb family trees. The IGI seldom links
families together and it is nice to have some basis of those you are researching.
For some individuals there can be numerous entries, some vary by name
spellings and dates. Each of these should be checked as they may provide additional
information on the family or person being searched. When the individual record
is brought up, it is important to check the family link and pedigree link to
the right.
The older submissions will sometimes provide an entire family group. Since
1991, this does not seem to happen. The source of information should always be
checked.
The family group sheets from earlier submissions often contain more
information than what is in the database. When using the old binders one could move
from family to family in searching. For one family I have over 200 family
group sheets. Now you need to order the microfilms to view them.
Additional notes and source information may be found in ancestral file or
pedigree resource file, which will extend this family file. I have made some
valuable finds in using these records. The pedigree resource file is only an
index online, but you can see the pedigree by clicking on the link. To see the
file you will need to visit a FHC or order the CD's. This is also a great
format for preserving the research you have done for future researchers.
The key to all of this is that these are not sources, but clues to sources.

connections. One must be wary of false or misleading connections and information,
but that is the nature of the work that we are doing.Susan LeBlanc, Oregon
