In the best of all worlds, every document we print out would give us the
option of a source citation in CMS, Evidence, MLA or whatever style and
have an intuitive interface that would find the record we are looking
for in a millisecond. In the real world we need to be grateful that we
have multiple companies (and Footnote and Ancestry are not alone here)
that are willing to scan and index the records we want to preserve and
have access to. No one company or even two companies have the resources
to do everything we want or that NARA needs help in preserving.
We should be counting our blessings that we have an archivist who is
actively seeking workable solutions to the preservation problem. I fact
it wouldn't hurt to send him a thank you.
