Here in Pensacola, one Catholic church was reluctant to allow folks to view
their records as it was the place of worship for our "Creole" folks.
In Pensacola, creole was a mix of Spanish and African.
Many light-skinned went west and passed for white.
I had one lady who I assisted while working in a library relate her tale of
finding the census records for her family that orginally showed race as "C"
changed to a "B". The feds didn't recognize creole. Her tall, blonde,
blue-eyed son had trouble getting the records from this church. I dealt
with another family who knew their grandfather was creole from N.O. In N.O.
creole is usually 1st generation from European parents. But this family was
from Pensacola originally and they were Pensacola creole.
