Kate,
As creative and "out of the box" thinking as Rollie has offered, it seems
clear that Ellsworth was indeed born in Iowa. Not only does the 1880 census
show that he, and an older brother were born in Iowa, but his 1910, 1920 and
1930 census records (all in Minnesota) all confirm his Iowa birth, as does
the 1905 Minnesota state census.
>From the Minnesota death index, it appears that he died in Itasca County on
4 July 1944, so a copy of his death certificate might solve the question for
you. If it does not include a specific birth town, it may include a Social
Security number, from which you should be able to get his precise birth
place on his SS5 form.
As to a place in Iowa, Belleview is a possibility, but does not fit really
well with the writing, as the second letter clearly seems to be an 'a.' You
might want to consider Balfour (Mills Co.).
Good luck!
