I wrote a rough draft of an obit for an aunt who was moved to a
nursing home on 20 June 2008.  I received a call on 26 June 2008 that
she had died.

A family friend who was her guardian had a meeting to complete the
arrangements that afternoon and she had made a few notes.  I filled in
the blanks on my draft and faxed it over to the funeral director.  He
combined what we both had.

I knew it would be rather costly as the local newspaper charged $5/line.

When we arrived in Ohio on Sunday, my brother had already clipped it
out.  I just knew he would have some sarcastic remark about the
length-he said I forgot to mention the family in the 1300's that moved
to another location. : )  I wish I know about one of my lines in the
1300's!

Anyway, at the funeral home, I met two "new" Campbell cousins and I'm
sure the obit brought them there.  One of them was the daughter-in-law
of my paternal grandfather's sister.  After the death of her
mother-in-law, she inherited a large box of photos and papers that has
been sitting in a closet for 33 years.  Guess who is expecting a
package in a few weeks. : ) (I did offer to stop by her house and pick
them up, but she said she was busy the next couple of days.)

The other new cousin is descended from a brother of my paternal
great-grandfather.  She brought me a handwritten genealogy bringing me
up-to-date on some current generations.

I got lucky on the bill.  My aunt had already had made her
arrangements and some money was budgeted for the obit.  She also had a
balance in her bank account so her social worker was going to pay the
remainder.  I was wondering how I was going to explain to my husband
that I spent over $250 on a obit.

I just listed her parents and siblings  and the years they died.  I
also named both sets of her grandparents and where they resided.  I
thought about going back several generations, but realized I would be
banned from any future genealogical activity that involved travel
outside of the county.
