Rhonda,
I recently found a marriage record for a great uncle who I was told never
married. He actually had married in 1911 in NYC. In the 1920 and 1930 census
he listed himself as divorced. His wife, living separately, listed herself in
1920 and 1930 as widowed. He died in 1952 and in his probate file, his NYC
Fire Dept. pension went to his wife that he married in 1911. He was not
divorced, she was not widowed in 1920 & 1930. They were Catholic and I am sure
that as an earlier response noted, the stigma prevented them from being fully
honest.
If you cannot find the KY marriage record you are seeking, have you tried
searching for a death record, obituary, will or probate file that may list
survivors, a marriage and maybe even a place of marriage? Did your great
grandfather serve in the military...perhaps that is another place to find a marriage
date/record, especially if he was eligible for a pension? Since he was alive
in 1920 is there a WW I registration card for him that will show a
wife/marriage?
