It looks like a mistake in the 1840 census. John Martin Coss is listed
as John Martin, just before one of his sons. This John is a pensioner,
altho his age is given as 80. I wonder how firm the birth date of 1751
is for John. Exaggeration of one's age for elderly males was quite
common. In any case if it is certain, its then likely that the age of 80
may be a mistake.
I also wonder if his being entered as " John Martin" may be an alternate
name. Have you checked to see if he is in the pension records as John
Martin? There are John Martins from New York listed at both Heritage
Quest and footnote.com as Revolutionary War pensioners.
