I am not sure about earlier entries, but Richard is correct for more recent
entries. My father died in July 2003 and my mother collected the death
benefit. He showed up in the index about 9-10 months later. My mother died
March 2007 and we did not qualify for the death benefit, but her death was
reported to SS. She showed up in the index about 4 months later.
