Cynthia, The surname is unquestionably Mulvihill (a fairly common
Irish name, so I don't know why you'd have limited luck with online
searching). In Irish, it would be O Maoilmhichil (with an accent on
the "O"), meaning a devotee of St. Michael. FYI, it looks like the
townland is Aughrim in Co. Kerry. FYI2, I would take the date of
birth with a grain of salt, as it was reported nearly 40 days later
-- in Ireland at the time, the birth had to be registered within 45
days or the parents would be fined, so parents who were late
registering routinely altered the date of birth they reported so that
it fell within the 45 days. You may very well find a church record
that baby Thomas was baptized some time prior to his reported date of
birth.
Bob, Irish birth records exist in Ireland from 1864 to present, the
LDS just was not allowed to film them all. And what the LDS have
filmed are transcriptions themselves -- they are duplicates sent at
the end of each reporting period to the central government. The
originals are still in the hands of the local registrars, while the
duplicate registrars were those sent to Dublin, combined into volumes
that were later indexed by the GRO and later still filmed by the
LDS. The indexes refer to volume and page numbers that apply only to
the duplicate registers in GRO custody, not to the original registers
in local custody.
Hope that helps.
