Subject: [APG] Net Worth & Purchasing Power Converters for Various Currencies
Date: Mon, 10 Nov 2008 09:11:54 -0600

The recent thread about various UK currency terms and values reminds me
of a recently discovered tool that might be of value. Where possible I
found it helpful to give my clients an appreciation of, for example, the
relative value of an ancestor's net worth or the purchasing power of
his/her wages, by converting them to their approximate equivalent in
"today's dollars."

I found what appears to be a powerful and accurate set of tools for
doing this at http://eh.net/hmit/ In particular, for United States
dollars, UK pounds, Japanese yen, and Chinese yuan, this site links
directly to http://www.measuringworth.com which appears to be well
supported.

To decide which of the many conversion tools to use for a given
currency, it is a good idea to first study the examples found directly
at http://www.measuringworth.com/worthmeasures.html If this is too
intimidating, select a specific conversion tool via the eh.net host and
look at the references/examples found at the bottom of their respective
pages.

Now, if anyone knows a similar on-line conversion tool for Confederate
dollars, please share. One excellent, on-line published source that
deals with Confederate economic history is Marc Weidenmier, "Money and
Finance in the Confederate States of America," in Robert Whaples,
editor, _EH.Net Encyclopedia_
(http://eh.net/encyclopedia/article/weidenmier.finance.confederacy.us ,
[posted publication date:] September 23, 2002; last accessed 8 November
