In all fairness to the dedicated family history researcher or genealogist,
it would be wise to check all available resources for possible family
information. One would surely short change their research by not availing the
IGI/AF/PRF in their research. Many times a family member may possess personal
knowledge that can be found no where else. I for one have a great deal of family
information found in personal sources.
In the past year I have worked with five clients in cleaning up and
verifying their family information. It has been an amazing process. To begin we
analyzed what was in the families possession, then used census records to track
the family, looked at online indexing to locate family information, ordered
records and microfilms, checked out Rootsweb family trees and then compared that
with the LDS files. Hidden clues were found in all of the above resources. We
would have been sorely remiss to have overlooked any one of them. Once the
process was completed the entire files with sources were uploaded to Pedigree
Resource File. That file is then combined with the new.familysearch files and
is free for anyone to access when it becomes available to the public. So if
you feel that these files are not worthy of your time, that is a very
unfortunate denial of possible pertinent information. All of the IGI/AF/PRF files
are subject to error as they were created by humans, many of whom honestly
wanted only to honor their ancestors. If you should connect to any of my
ancestors in the LDS files, I would be more than happy to share the information that
is in my possession.
