Jeanette, and All List Members:
My reference to Baptists was intended to be humor but I didn't insert the
obligatory <grin> or ;-). My sincere apologies for any offense created. I
too am a "dyed-in-the-wool" Baptist, one of those "weird sorts <big grin>
that believe in feet washing" as part of the Palm Sunday observance. The
"Fundamental Baptist" label has been bandied about quite freely in an
extremely negative way by many political and religious groups, including the
Latter Day Saints, during the recent presidential election and reporting on
other national issues. My only intention in using the term was to show that
bigotry and bias extends to all groups not just the LDS.
My point was supposed to be that religion should be left out of these
discussions unless it is applicable to the topic. As far as I know, the only
Occidental religion to promote genealogy as part of their doctrine is the
LDS. [Many Oriental cultures are able to trace their ancestry back thousands
of years with great accuracy. (We should take lessons. <another grin.>)] The
LDS have been very active in genealogy because it is part of their basic
doctrine, whether required or suggested as some have argued on this list. I
copied and pasted the following excerpt from the website
<http://lds.about.com/od/basicsgospelprinciples/p/baptized_dead.htm>.
"Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you concerning your dead: When any of you
are baptized for your dead, let there be a recorder....
"That in all your recordings it may be recorded in heaven; whatsoever you
bind on earth, may be bound in heaven; whatsoever you loose on earth, may be
loosed in heaven." (D <http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/127/6-7#6> &C
127:6-7.)
Importance of Genealogy: Family
<http://lds.about.com/od/ldsfamilyhistory/LDS_Family_History.htm> History
(Genealogy) is important to members of the LDS Church because we know that
the work of baptism and other ordinances must be done for all our ancestors
so they too can return to the presence of our Heavenly Father.
"Must be done for all our ancestors." is stronger than a suggestion. I
believe (have not researched this but have seen mention on this or another
list) that church policy may have changed in recent years to limit temple
work to the LDS member's own ancestors. I'm sure that someone can correct me
if this is not true. For many years in the past, this was not so. Any member
could submit any person or persons for proxy baptism if they completed
required temple work. I suspect this is where many of the mistakes in the
IGI, Family Search and its progenitors originated.
>From the official LDS website <http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc> I insert the
following:
All of the Church's family history endeavors are directed to the need to
form a "welding link-between the fathers and the children" (D
<http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/128/18#18> &C 128:18).
I don't want to start another flaming thread but it would seem that accuracy
in research and sealing practices would be of ultimate importance to the LDS
because some of the mistakes in the IGI indicate that there have been
several persons in my Lutheran/Presbyterian/Methodist/Free Will Baptist
family that have been sealed to the wrong parents or spouses. I think that
may cause a problem in the Celestial Kingdom for their LDS descendants.
<another grin.>
Another quote pasted from the LDS Doctrine and Covenants indicates that
accuracy is of prime importance.
An epistle from Joseph Smith the Prophet to the Latter-day Saints at Nauvoo,
Illinois, containing directions on baptism for the dead; dated at Nauvoo,
September 1, 1842. HC 5: 142-144.
9 And again, let all the arecords <http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/127/9a>
be had in order, that they may be put in the archives of my holy temple, to
be held in remembrance from generation to generation, saith the Lord of
Hosts.[D&C 127:9]
The extreme defensive stance coming from both LDS and non-LDS on this list
is very disturbing. My perception of several posters' responses is that
since the LDS organization and its many members have performed a great
service for the rest of the genealogy world in extracting, copying, filming,
providing access (both paid and free) that they should NOT be held to the
same standard as the rest of us striving for accuracy in research. I cannot
agree with this. The LDS umbrella covering the many databases and research
options should be held accountable for accuracy, just as I am. I sincerely
appreciate the great efforts expended by the LDS in collecting and making
available historical records but that does not mean that they should be
given a pass for sloppy and shoddy work.
As professionals and hobbyists, we should each strive to preserve all
history in the most accurate way possible.
Again, my apologies if my comments have offended any Baptists,
Presbyterians, Methodists, Buddhists, Hindus, Atheists, or LDS members.

Debra
Just one question, why did you refer to Baptists as "that dreaded
Fundamental Baptist"? I grew up in that faith and don't understand the
derrogatory remark. Perhaps others are surprised and offended. I'm sure
that wasn't your intent but just don't understand why after efforts have
been made to stress religious tolerance for the LDS and other religious
groups that this tiype of remark would have been written.
Sincerely,
Jeanette
