I'm glad to see that at least some verification is being done at SMOG. I
was in contact with them early on when they first began the project, and I
strongly warned them that their results would have little validity even for
rough comparison purposes if they didn't raise the bar a bit on the
credibility of the submitted pedigrees. I wondered at the time how anyone
could start something like that without realizing that doing so without some
sort of check in place would make the results questionable to say the least.
They were looking for a CDN representative but I didn't want to be involved
at all, for those reasons.

Judy,

It depends upon if the company (GeneBase BioNet) allowed its clients to
"post" their known pedigree information. The DNA testing would not pinpoint
the exact parents. I know that I and many other genealogists in Salt Lake
City tried to explain to SMGF that they should not be using the Ancestral
File as the basis of the genealogies they posted on their website. SMGF
hired graduates from BYU who in turn verified whatever information could be
vertified with Ancestry.com census records but didn't worry about the
earlier information that was submitted when clients had their DNA tested for
genealogical purposes. The scientific relational results would be correct
but when unchecked pedigrees and family group information are added on to
the correct information, you might as well throw out the information prior
to 1850 or later depending upon the understanding of the researcher who used
that for "proof."

Your client doesn't really have "proof" as far as I am concerned. Until you
know where GeneBase BioNet or the poster who claimed that it came from there
really got it, you have nothing.

Jeanette

Subject: [APG] DNA information needed

I need some help understanding DNA ancestry searches. Right now my head
is spinning. I have had several clients who worked with DNA companies. One
client was traced back to a William Lee. However, William had a number of
children and there was apparently no way of knowing which of them had been
my
client's ancestor. I was hired to trace forward from William. Another
client learned that she and another researcher had an ancestor in common,
but
did not know who (accept for the surname). I understood those.

But this client has posed a different problem. She contacted someone on
one of the message boards who had claimed James and Mary were the parents of
Giles (bc 1822). The surnames of James and Giles is unimportant, but
Mary's maiden name was Giles. And so, although this connection has been
considered a strong possibility, no proof as been found. Both Mary and James
left
wills and neither mentioned Giles. When my client contacted the woman from
the board asking what proof she had, the poster said the information came
from GeneBase BioNet.

Can anyone explain how the relationship of Giles to both of these supposed
parents could be proven solely through DNA. Science was never one of my
strong areas in school, so please answer as simply as possible..
