An excellent idea, Kathleen--and one I've found to be effective, as long as
I had sufficient time to actively work with all the interested students. Dr.
Joan Mitchell, a biologist at the University of Alabama, whom some of this
list will recall for her work with NGS and Samford IGHR, also worked
successfully with the UA External Degree program. Perhaps some of our
colleagues on this list will be inspired to try it with new-college or
external-degree programs in their area. (Hint: Most of those "top notch
leaders of our field" are already strung thin; so I hope that others on the
list who are too modest to put themselves in that category will realize that
they, too, qualify. :)
