Like Elissa, I'm also looking forward to the PMC and the FGS conference in
Little Rock! The main conference will be great, but for professionals, it
goes beyond that. The value of professionals and/or would-be professionals
attending the PMC and the PMC luncheon is tremendous. Yes, there are the
informative lectures that are outlined in the conference brochure. But that
isn't all you get from attending these events.
Speaking just from my own experience (and I'm sure my experience is not
unique), the networking opportunities alone are worth the registration fee.
While I always meet new people at any conference I attend, the people I meet
at the PMC tend to become lasting friends and colleagues. There's a special
camaraderie among people who are serious enough about their occupation to
register for this pre-conference. I've also ended up with more work thanks
to the people I meet at PMC events. I have had contacts at the PMC
subcontract work to me and I have hired some of them in return. I've formed
a valuable relationship with a colleague as "CG buddies," encouraging each
other as we work through the application process. In the context of that
"work" relationship, I've formed a valued friendship. These aren't unusual
events for me. They happen at every PMC I attend.
The FGS conference in and of itself is valuable for genealogists of every
level of expertise, but the addition of the PMC events aimed specifically at
the professional is an exceptional experience, both educationally and
personally. Don't miss it!
