A few years ago Spatial-Literacy.org was written up for a surname spread
project they created. You could type in a surname and see its spread on a
map of the UK in either 1881 or 1998. It was written up in a BBC article.
The surname project is currently located here:
http://www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk/
It appears as though a worldwide project is in the works.
To read more about other similar projects Spatial-Literacy.org is working
on, visit:

They may or may not be able to provide tips you can use in your own project.

Best of luck,
Laura
