Janice,

I have two published works that both incorrectly have information on my ancestor. I verified and reverified and am now positive that the published works are incorrect. So I would say verify everything! In their defense, the sources I used to verify weren't readily available when the original research was done; i.e., 1920 and 1930 census records and many on-line newspapers, land records, and legal documents.

Subject: [APG] Verify Your Information

On the subject of verifying information, at what point is it
reasonable to accept previous work?  I have heard many on this list
say that they verify everything, even from existing published
documented work.  That runs counter to my experience in academic
research and publishing, where one usually (but not always,
admittedly) starts with published documented work as the beginning of
one's own work.
