It may have been closed but I think I saw it when I was in Ft Smith. It
sits right on the river.

> Ft. Smith, Ark., Sept. 19. -- Acting under orders of the government
United States Marshal Mayes Tuesday morning finally closed the United States
jail in this city; the last of the federal jails in the country outside the
capital. The jail is a relic of border days and in its early history housed
the eighty-eight outlaws hung under the regime of the famous hanging Judge
Parker.
> When closed it housed but one convict and four prisoners awaiting trial
for bootlegging.
