Hi Folks, the old windbag is back from his chores. Before I give you my
promised beetle report I have some serious archive business to talk with
you about.

Most of you folks been at this archiving longer than me so you may be
aware of the existance of downloadable Census Bureau databases. There
are essentially three. A counties, populated places and MCDs which
contains all places including historical. Now, these can be reached with
the Gazateer and or the USGS GNIS query system IF you ask the right
question(s). Sometimes though it seems impossible to extract what you
want. The downloadables are nearly worthless to you unless you are
familar with relational databasing. The downloads each have a field in
common with the other two. If these databases are put into a database
program such as RBase and each in it's own table they can be linked with
this common field. Which means that each place be it populated,
historical or landmark can be extracted and exported by county, township
and state or put into a report.

This data comes out in ascii .txt format and provides a really neat
resource for your state to use for people wanting to know where a
currently nonexistant village stood or a populated place or butte or
whatever. Included is the latitude and longitude which can be put into
the Tiger map server for display after converting to degrees and
decimals.

Now I have promised my good friend Kevin that I would extract Hawaii for
him and then I thought why not see if I can build a huge country wide
data base that maybe, just maybe Linda could put on her toc page or I
guess I could put it on the ND toc page and anyone wanting their state
could cut and paste the headings and their portion of the .txt file for
inclusion in their archives.

For an example of what you are getting go to the ND archives, after
Brian gets his box fixed, and click on Adams county. I believe I put all
available information in Adams.

If I get enough interest I will work on it for you as time permits. The
data file will be in alphabetical order so it will be easy to read and
use.

Anyway, don't tell Joy bout this cause the big states can get a nice
byte jump on her. We will wait til everybody gets a shot at it and then
let her in on it, tehe.

Now here is the promised beetle report.

Miss Linda, I wants to offa you a one time good deal fer that there ALL
List of yours. I was a-talkin to the chief dung beetle in my back forty
bout how those fellers over on the ALL List was a-usin their industrial
prodution and he said, well now, if they gonna fling that stuff round
bout that-a way we gonna redesign it and make dung cubes, yes maam, dung
cubes. I sez now what yew gonna do that fer? and he sez so those fellers
can make a little money shootin craps, get it, c*r*a*p*s. I'm a-duckin,
I'm a-duckin.

Joe
