I use a program named EditPad. Among other neat features, it allows me to search for and replace line feed and tab characters. For instance if I have a double spaced document, I search for 2 line feeds and have it replace them with one line feed.

I didn't like the newest version of the program. It's getting away from being the basic text editor it was designed be. I have the older version I use uploaded and you can download it for your use. It is postcardware. The author of the program is from Eastern Europe. All he asks is that you send him a postcard from you hometown if you use the software. Just unzip the file to a directory and create a shortcut on your desktop or toolbar.
There's also some other programs that I have found useful. They are all freeware.
