While this response was intended for LADONNA PIPKIN, I realized that many
other surnames are included in the articles, paragraphs that included the
names LADONNA was interested in.....I thought it would benefit everyone at
the same time:) Hope it helps many of you..... Keep in mind...these books
are just inserts out of the newspaper from back then. The grammar is not
mine, the spelling is not mine (though mines not much better!)
Here is what I have found.....
Happenings in Okolona and Antoine Township * 1869-1930
Okolona was founded in 1854 by JASON M. SHACKELFORD. He settled on the
west-side of Main Street near the area where the railroad tracks are. The
first site for the town's location was about one block east of Main Street.
The first town well can still be seen across from the NEIL COOK residence.
The town was soon moved to it's present location because the original site
was too muddy. Mr. SHACKELFORD named the town after Okolona, Mississippi,
where he had been reared.
Some of the early settler's here were the BUCHANONS, FRANK ETHRIDGE, COL.
CHARLES CARGILE, CAPTAIN T.M. EAST, WILLIAM B. ROSS, DR. F.M. PARK, J.C.
PETTUS, JASON M. SHAKELFORD, JOHN HARDIN, JOHN HAYS, MAJOR JOHN H. BELL,
DAVID FISH, A.E. THORNTON, A.J. THORNTON, WILLIAM GENTRY, DR. JOHN MCGILL AND
A NUMBER OF OTHERS.

It rains and corn and cotton is blooming, so is grass and weeds.
This scribe made a tour for religious purposes into the mountains near leard
post office two weeks ago. We found numerous good people living there, the
scenery romantic, cattle range fine and the soil moderately productive.
When this region shall have become the wine producing part of the south, it
will then be the glory of the state and the especial pride of Clark County.
For the same purpose we made tour in the opposite direction one week ago, and
spent a most pleasant Sunday among the people of MCNEELEY'S RIDGE. We formed
the acquaintance of MR. D.S. BUNCH and enjoyed the hospitality of MR. J.N.
WHITE two of Clark County's pillars and strong supports. We also had a very
enjoyable meeting in BEIRNE at night enjoying the kindness of MR. HILL CAGLE
one of the family successful mill men. We gladly accepted his invitation for
a stroll through the yards of the BARNES LUMBER COMPANY. We found it to be a
huge affair. We were on the lookout for X, the Standard's wide awake
correspondent there, but failed to find him. We hope to be more successful
next time.
