Barbara CARPENTER, 56 , of Piggott died Thursday, May 21, 1998 at Barnes
Hospital in St. Louis.
She was born September 9, 1941 in Piggott, the daughter of the late Alva
GRANVILLE and Freeda Irene BOLTON JOHNSON.
She was a member of the St. Francis Baptist Church.
Mrs. Carpenter worked for Dickerson Studio as a teenager, sold Avon in
West Memphis and later in Piggott, and owned and operated Carpenter's
Sac-It-To-Me grocery and laundromat in West Memphis.
She continued in the grocery business at Morris IGA, Warehouse Grocery,
Roeder's Foodland, Rebel Market, Irby's Super Saver, and Stewart-Hinkle
Value Market in Piggott.
She also worked at the Clay County Courthouse in Piggott as custodian
for 12 years.
Mrs. Carpenter was employed at Piggott State Bank from 1993 to 1997,
where she worked in the loan department. She also enjoyed acting as
co-hostess for the bank's PrimeTime Plus bus trips.
She is survived by one son, Scott CARPENTER and wife, Taniya, of
Piggott; three daughters, Faith CONLEY and husband, Steve and Charity
JOHNSON and husband Bryan, all of Piggott, and Hope BURKMAN and husband,
Jason, of Pollard; seven grandchildren, Adam CARPENTER, Christopher CONLEY,
Lance CONLEY, Cursty JOHNSON, Bryer JOHNSON, Brittney BELCHER, and Blake
BURKMAN; two sisters Lou Ella BOOK and Patsy COOK of Piggott; and many other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2pm Saturday, May 23, at the St. Francis
Baptist Church with Gary GREGORY officiating.
Burial was in Piggott Cemetery with Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home in
charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Jerry COOK, Keven BOOK, Joe BOLTON, Leroy BOLTON, Stan
COOK, Larry JOHNSON, and Dale BOOK.
Honorary pallbearers were Scott HINKLE, Randy HINKLE, Bobby BURNS,
Gaylon EDWARDS, Duane COOPER, Royce BALLARD, Lester CROSSFIELD, Clyde
BOLTON, and Bruce GOLDEN.
