Subject: [ARCLAY-L] Higgs Mountain
Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 20:51:50 EST
Hi, I have heard of a Higgs Mountain, and wondered if since my Higgs were
living in the area at the time, where and who was this peak named after, my
Great Grandfather Sanford Ramond Higgs, "Sonny" lived for a time in or near
Dalton, and several of his children grew up in the area. Two of his sisters
married into the King family. If I remember correctly, my grandfather
William Sanford Higgs born 1888, sharecropped for the Daltons on and off,
during the late teens and possibly the late 20's and the early 30's. I know
that they lived in Knobel in 37 as that is when my Dad was supposed to have
graduated from the high school there, his name was Ernest Higgs, apparently
they moved in and out of Randolph county, as the work in the fields must have
taken them back and forth. Has anyone heard of the Smithwick Farm, belonging
to a James Smith? I am hoping someone can help me with this little family
story. My father's family was poor, although I don't know that they suffered
much because of it, always had plenty to eat, and it seems from the stories I
have just started to hear, that they were more than able to entertain
themselves! Boys will be boys! I am the mother of three of them, thank god
for my one daughter! Betty Higgs Howlett
