Taken from the Clay County Courier column, "From Our Files........1888".
The Clay County Courier is located in Corning, Clay County, Arkansas.
The Owl and Bat club at the mayor's office is a fine success. President Tom
RAY is somewhat tedious and verbose in his narrations. He means well, but
like the ex-Deputy Sheriff of the Western District, he don't know much. We
prophesy that when he reaches the age of 1,000 or 1,500 years he may be able
to tell a tolerable yarn. Tom STALEY snored him out last Saturday night. As
soon as anything important happens we will report it.
The oyster supper given by the women of the Baptist Church, in Masonic Hall,
last Saturday night for benefit of the church, was a success, but owing to
the bad weather just before, caused many to stay home to avoid the muddy
streets.
There were three accidents to as many loaded wagons and teams on Tuesday, all
caused by being frightened by trains.
John PARRISH of Boydsville, the hotel man, sold out a few days ago and has
gone away. He was doing well he thought, but on Monday of last week, B.B.
BIFFLE and J.W. DOLLISON boarded there one day and were such gourmands that
they ate him out of house and home. It is strange that men as small as they
can hold so much.
Betting on the election by disinterested parties, apparently, was quite
brisk, but bets were two to one in favor of Cleveland. Excitement in Corning
exceeded anything we have ever seen, but still no disturbance was created or
allowed.
Moark has the boss tramway of Clay County. It is owned by Mr. JONES of JONES'
Mill and runs from his mill on Black River about two miles to Moark. It is in
excellent condition and is used constantly.
Henry BROWN, D.S., returned from Boydsville on the 5th, after being there two
days. He reports the town flourishing and nearly everyone in favor of CATES.
While away he visited Rector, accompanied by Will SPENCE, Henry SIMMONS and
others and spent an agreeable time and reports everything favorable for the
Democrats. Their town is nice and clean and their churches and schools are
good as any in the county.
JONES' Mill at Moark on the Black River, blew out the front sheet of the
boiler two weeks ago, but is now under full headway and doing good work. They
employ 15 hands and their shipments are eight cars per week. The lumbers used
are agriculture oak, ash, cypress, etc. There are now half a million feet of
lumber in the river at the mill. There is quite a village at the mill.
Dr. RADWAY's Ready Relief Ruff was in town on the 7th & 8th from the poor
hills East of the Current River. The doctor is a little hacked, it appears,
for Henry BROWN, the poorest pool player in the world beat him two straight
games. What's got the matter of you, Doctor?
