Taken for the Clay County Courier, Corning,
Arkansas........1973.
Weather has hampered construction of an addition to the
rear (Vines Street), of Corning Bank, but a completion
date of February 15 is expected to be met by the
contractor. the addition will be constructed of conctete
blocks with exterior of dark red brick matching the bank
building.. F.B. MANATT said that the addition, which
consists of approximately 2,200 square feet, will be
used for more than one purpose, but mostly to provide a
glassed-in fully lighted area which will be open 24
hours a day for night depository and will have five
new "speed" windows for those customers who wish to
make walk-up deposits or cash checks without having to
enter the main bank building. the addition will also
house a new community meeting room which will be
available at all times for group meetings. The bank's
book-keeping department will also be moved into the new
addition. Three corning Bank employees, Dennis SMITH,
C.E. (Jim) HEADLEY,Jr. and Mrs. Bill COBB have recently
attended training schools in Chicago to familiarize them
in operation of the bank's new computer system.
McKeever has been "something special" around the M.A.
BANKS home, Route One, ever since last April when he was
still a pup and was given to Marlena BANKS as a present
for her seventh birthday....and since last week he has
really been treated royally, even being allowed to stay
in the house.
According to Mrs. BANKS, her children, Marlena, seven
and Keith, 12, were ice skating on a pretty deep pnd in
the field back of the BANKS home when the ice broke and
they both fell in. Keith managed to get out of the pond
but every time he tried to reach Marlena, the ice would
break more. Marlena had fallen in with just head and o
ne arm above the ice and she was wearing a heavy coat at
the time. Mrs. BANKS said that Keith was afraid to try
to reach sis sister and that Marlena was screaming for
help when Old Mac jumped in the icy water and pulled her
to safety. Mrs. BANKS said that Old Mac has always been
particulary protective of Marlena and said that he made
a nuisance of himself last Summer when they would go
swimming because he kept going into the water and
pulling Marlena to shore.
January 1, 1973 marked the 20th anniversary of Russell-
Ermert funeral Home and Burial Association which is
owned and operated by Leslie D. RUSSELL and Richard O.
ERMERT. The firm moved, in November 1970, into their new
building on Highway 62 West(Elm street)from the downtown
location they had occupied since forming the
partnership. the new funeral home and burial association
building occupies 8,00 square feet and an additonal 4,00
square feet are used for storage room and two lane
covered driveway which covers nearly the full length of
the new building on the East side. the chapel has a
seating capacity if sine 255 persons and the concrete
parking area on the East side of the property
accomodates as many as 50 vehicles.
Corning Lions Club has accepted responsibilities of the
Beard-Mustache contest for the big Centennial
Celebration and appointed two of their members, Elmer
STARRETT and Clint LAUBACH, to ramrod the affair. The
two men are willing, but they don't know what to do or
where to start! they have called a meeting for Wednesday
night, February 7, in the Chamber of Commerse office
starting at seven' o'clock. All persons who are
interested in helping to formulate rules for the contest
are asked to attend this meeting and become well aware
of the penalties in store for those who appear on the
streets clean shaven before the date of the big
celebration, July 4th.
The new Corning water treatment plant will be used for
water softening and iron removal and will have a
capacity of one and one-half million gallons per day.
The plant is the last phase of an overall project whcih
included water and sewage lines, wells and a sewage
pumping station. All phases are complete with the
exception of the water treatment plant which will be
completed with in the next 30 or 40 days depending on
weather conditions.
