This story is true. My father, Francis Marion's grandson has told me this story. The family moved to Ark. about 1904/1905 according to my father who is 88yrs old now, and still has a pretty good memory. He has a picture of the Cox family in Illinois, taken in 1894, which includes Francis Marion, almost all his brothers and sister, their children and grandchildren, also, his mother.
