Article ran in the Van Buren Press which was copied from another local
newspaper called the Hackett Horse shoe:

October 20, 1888

HACKETT HORSE SHOE: Mrs. Catherine Fears of Crawford County is over on a
visit to the Williams family. Mrs. Fears was made a widow by the Mexican War.
She is about seventy three years of age, and is still living on the place
where her husband left her when he shouldered arms and went out in defense of
his country. She had four boys to raise and educate, which she did creditable
to herself, making a support for them with her own hands. Two of her sons
have died and left widows, and two are still honored citizens of Crawford
County.
