Pansy:
What a great story and a great family find. That is good enough for
your local societies' newsletter.
Another reminder for the list members. Ask for the complete pension
application packet and for the complete military packet - otherwise you may
get just the few papers for which the archivist thinks you are asking.
You can ask the charges for copying the complete packet before deciding
whether you want to pay that much.
I have my great-grandfather's signature because he signed an affidavit
saying he knew his mother-in-law and that she was indeed indigent and in
need of the pension.
