Hi all,

I am a new subscriber to the Dallas Co. list. I recently was forwarded a
earlier posting on the list regarding James Alfred Roy and Sampson McCown
Speer, the bro. and bro. in law of my GGGgrandfather. Would anyone with
access to these records be kind enough to do a look up of the source? Also in
the area was Alfred's bro. Larkin Roy who married Leah Bryant in November,
1845.

Well, quickly looking - there may be a few more such stories in the greater
family but here's who I found first - Sampson McCown Speer (whose mother
was a Nutt and was there for a double cousin of Ben Nutt) and his
brother-in-law Alfred Roy apparently tried to make it to Missouri. They
were overtaken at Crowley's Ridge in St. Francis Co. and Alfred was shot
and hanged. Sampson was returned to Calhoun Co. and given a brief trial
and hanged on May 11, 1863.
