Dear Desiree,
Thank you very much for your response and for re-directing my
message to the list. I am very new at computer-aided family history
research and will have to "learn the ropes." I am really enjoying the
list messages, and I hope to eventually find my niche so that I may
contribute in return.
My grandfather, George Walker McAlister, Sr. was born in 1876 and
died in 1967. He had his full faculties when he entered the hospital
for the first time the day before he passed away. I have his "ledger"
in which he recorded much family information. This includes a section
in which he lists information about a "John Churchill."
I have purchased in paperback the two volume Churchill history that
was written about 1910. It lists a John Churchill as the oldest child
of Joseph Dell and Lucretia Bocock Churchill. However, since I have
known no one who descends from this particular Churchill, I have not
shared this information with anyone.
My grandfather was the second son of Luevina Churchill Garner, a
younger sister of John Churchill. Luevina was in her 40s and Crawford
McAlister was in his 60s when they married and had two sons, my
grandfather being the younger. Both lived to see their sons grown.
I have essentially no documented information about Luevina
Churchill Garner. She is 17 and unmarried in 1850 and unmarried and
working as a domestic at age 27. In 1873 she married Crawford
McAlister. Family tradition indicates that her first husband was "Jeff
Garner." They may have had two children who died young. In any case,
she was not living with him nor did she have children with her in 1860.
If anyone has any information about such a person, or can identify the
Garner whom she married, I would be very grateful for the information.
Luevina was the daughter of Joseph Dell Churchill and a widow,
Lucretia Bocock. Her maiden name was "Bland," and I suspect she may be
related to the Bland family that first appeared in Perry County. Mary
Bland, who may be her relative, married a McAlister, relationship to
Crawford McAlister unknown at this time.
Do you have information regarding Lucretia Bland? My information
is limited to her name and what I have written above. My only contacts
about the Churchill family have been through connections to my Webb and
McAlister families of Pope County, Arkansas. I have done quite a bit of
work on Churchill antecedents, including maternal lines; however,
Lucretia Bland remains a mystery. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
I am "physically challenged" as they say now. However, it makes
more sense to me to say that I am handicapped as a series of accidents
and use family history as a way to occupy my time. I have a seventeen-
year- old daughter who is helping me learn to use a computer. My mother
is widowed and also makes her home with me. I would be delighted to
have new correspondents who are familiar with the Churchill family and
its branches in Izard County. My computer is my link to the outside
world, and is much easier than handwriting a letter!
My Grandfather McAlister wrote to the Langston family, for I found
the address at Calico Rock in his ledger. He also kept in touch with a
descendant of Wm. Walker Churchill and Delphini Marandy McAlister
Churchill. I did not know about a Churchill reunion but I would like to
attend if I can get my daughter to bring me in 2000.
I keep seeing the name "James Jeffrey." This was the given name of
Luevina Churchill Garner McAlister's older brother. Does anyone know
why?
Thank you in advance for any assistance I may be provided regarding
my Izard County roots and relatives.
I have a question about the Izard County History book. May
articles be submitted about each of the Churchill children who are
connected to the McAlister family, i.e. Luevina and Wm. Walker. I have
pictures of both Luevina "Churchill" and Crawford McAlister and Wm.
Walker and Marandy "McAlister" Churchill. Any and all help will be
appreciated. If I can help anyone else, please let me know.
