Hello Christy:=0D
=0D
I learned a few more things about Jesse B. while in Arkansas. First, however=
, Jeffery, Jeffrey, Jeffries, Jeffress, etc. in North Arkansas are usually a=
ll the same folks. People, clerks, etc. could not spell very well back then =
and you find different spellings of Jeffery, many times for the same individ=
ual. The same Jefferys that Jean Cuevas has are your Jefferys to one degree =
or another.=0D
=0D
Jesse B. Jeffery was the son of "old" Jesse Jeffery, son of James Jeffery of =
England. He was born in Lawrence County, Missouri Territory about 1815. This =
area later became part of Arkansas. Jesse B. had two brothers, Jeremiah, and =
James J. He had three sisters, one of whom was named Louisia..=0D
=0D
A Jesse Jeffery of Lawrence County married Arpa Cumpton of Independence Coun=
ty, Arkansas on Jan. 22, 1837 in Independence Co. This may have been Jesse B=
. or it could have been his father. Records show Jesse B. to have married Sa=
ry Jane Poer in Lawrence Co. on Jan.27, 1838. The 1850 census of Lawrence Co=
. shows this household:=0D
=0D
Jesse B. Jeffery, age 35, farmer. Sarah, age 32, born in Texas. The children=
, all born in Arkansas were Jarrett, age 11; Frances, age 8; Martha, age 6; =
Berry, age 3, and Elizabeth, age 2.=0D
=0D
They lived in Reeds Creek Township which is th southwest corner of Lawrence =
Co. bordering on Independence County. By 1860, daughter Frances, age 19, had =
married James Gibson, a ferryman and farmer in Duty Township, Lawrence Co. T=
hey took in four of the children after Sary Jane had died. These were Berry =
(12), Elizabeth (10), Jesse (James?) (8), and Mary (3). Martha Jeffery (16) =
joined the house hold of Hamilton W. Harlow and his wife, Louisia. Both were =
in their early 40s. I believe this Louisia was Jesse B's sister. They were i=
n Big Creek Township, Lawrence County.=0D
=0D
Martha later married James McCall in Lawrence County on March 14, 1861. They =
had 7 children: James E., F.O., Martha, Robert, and Laure Jessie. The other =
two children died early.=0D
=0D
There is an undated petition by Jesse M. Jeffery requesting the Court to app=
oint James McCall his guardian. Another petition by Frances J. Gibson on 6 D=
ec 1869 requests that James McCall be appointed guardian of Mara R. Jeffery =
(Martha ?). Sary Jane had died by 1869.=0D
=0D
James McCall enlisted in the Condeferate army during the Civil War and was a =
member of Colonel Babers' regiment. He was captured by the Federal army on C=
hristmas day, 1863 in Ripley County, MO and sent to Rock Island, Illinois pr=
ison camp. Rock Island was one of the worst of the Yankee POW camps, and mos=
t men died there. James was lucky to make it back home, but he did and settl=
ed down with Martha on a 120 acre farm near Portia, Arkansas. Martha and Jam=
es were member s of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.=0D
=0D
This all I know about these Jefferys at this time. "Old" Jesse Jeffery was o=
ne of the better known pioneers in Arkansas. He was often in court at Davids=
onville where Stephen F. Austin (Austin, Texas) was the judge. If Old Jesse =
wasn't suing someone, someone else was suing him. He was a fighter, and a ge=
neral hell-raiser, but still commanded the respect of the community and was =
a leader in early political affairs of Arkansas when it was still Missouri T=
erritory.=0D
=0D
I hope this helps with your genealogy project.=0D
