"Mrs. Margaret Whitfield, better known to everyone in this section as "Aunt
Peggy", died last Saturday morning at 11:30 o'clock, September 28, 1929 at
the home of her son, Rev. Y. Whitfield, at Pineville, with whom she has
made her home for many years. Her death was not unexpected, as she had
been in feeble health for many months past and has been confined to her bed
for some time. She was born March 15, 1842 and was 87 years, 6 months, and
13 days of age.
Deceased was born in this county and township, her birthplace being three
miles norwest of here. All her life was spent here. Her maiden name was
LANGSTON. On November 13, 1856, she was united in marriage to Mr. Allen
Whitfield, this happy union being broken by the death of the husband 23
years ago. As a young woman, Mrs. Whitfield united with the Cumberland
Presbyterian Church at Union Congregation, wiht which she remained a faithful
member till death, over a period of 75 years. She was a consistend and
active church worker and stood ready and willing at all times to aid in any
way in advancing the moral surroundings of her community and otherwise
performing her Christian duty. Those who knew her best will remember
through the coming years as a gentlewoman of loveliness and grace,
possessed of the fine principles and noble heart. Her passing is an event
of great sorrow to the hosts who knew her and were associated with her
through the years of a useful life.
The funeral was held at Union Church, services being conducted by Rev. J.R.
JENNINGS, pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Calico Rock.
Burial took place in the nearby Trimble Camp Ground Cemetery. The largest
gathering ever seen at that cemetary was present to pay last respects to
the deceased.
Deceased is survived by three sons and four daughters: Jasper Whitfield of
Little Rock; Casey L. Whitfield of Merriam, Kansas; Rev. Y Whitfield of
Pineville; Mrs. Mary MOODY of Iuka; Mrs. Tennessee IVIE of Cross Roads; and
Mrs. Alice CLARK of Brockwell, Sixty-three grandchildren, 102 great-grand
children, and 15 great-great grandchildren, and a sister, Aunt Polly HIVELY
