Bernie,I have been in Ohio and apologize for not telling the
story. This is one I haven't thought of in several years so if anyone has
more to add or corrections to make- go ahead. Ambrose was home from the
war and heartbroken over Mary Mason. India had lost her husband in death and
both were alone. Friends of both of them wanted to get them together but
neither wanted anything to do with it. One day Ambrose was passing by on his
horse and saw India butchering a hog. He stopped and helped her with the hog
and a romance bloomed from that meeting. From all we have heard and read
they had a very happy and loving life together. There was not much money in
that home even though Ambrose was a lawyer. This was right after the Civil
War and people had lost things from men in the family to possessions.
Nothing was of value as for as crops and stock and it was a starving country
at that time. Ambrose had to borrow money from his daughter in Texas to bury
India. It is said he grieved for her and went to her grave every day till he
died.Even though he had love Mary Mason this was the marriage
for Ambrose. God has a way of bringing things about.
Now I have dug deep in the cobwebs in my mind to recall this story. Somebody
help me out if you have more.Elvada Russell Walker
