Subject: [ARIZARD-L] CALIFORNIA GOLD FIELDS (Look-up offer)
Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 20:25:28 EST

A few weeks ago, there were postings about ancestors who had gone to the gold
fields in California during the 1850's, then literally disappeared from
sight. Unfortunately, I deleted those messages, so will make this offer to
any who are interested.

I remember my friend Edith (GUNN) JENSEN telling me about 20-25 years ago,
that many years earlier she (and another friend) had spent several weeks
going through old cemeteries in the gold rush towns of the Mother Lode and
had compiled information on them. I'm fairly sure she said they had written
at least two books about it, but do not know the names of the books. They
probably would have been about the cemeteries in Amador & El Dorado Counties.

I do not know exactly where you can locate a copy of these books, but they
were both excellent genealogists, and I cannot imagine them doing all that
work and not making it available to other researchers. Since they were both
members of Daughters of the American Revolution, I would assume there is a
copy at the DAR Library in Washington, D.C. Also, although not members of the
LDS Church, they used the library extensively. It is certainly feasible they
would have donated copies to that library as well.

And, I am positive others have done books about all those old cemeteries, as
well.

My offer is: If YOU find where your ancestor is buried, and would like
someone to take a picture of the grave and mail back to you, I would be happy
to do that. It may take me a little while, but since I have two brothers who
live in the northern section of the Mother Lode, a son who lives in the
middle section and I live near the southern most part, I will eventually be
fairly close to all of those old towns.

Good luck on locating the cemetery where they are buried. Just e-mail me the
information and your address and I will get back to you.
