Thanks Jean,
I have Mandy pictures a dainty little thing. We are fortunate to have so
many recorded stories and history. I have read many Jeffery stories from
this site that I had not heard before. There are still lots to learn. Thanks
to all the researchers.
I have been home because of the snow this weekend and have enjoyed chatting
with so many of you.
Elvada

From "Jeffery Pioneers in the Ozarks" by Dale Hanks:
P. 8:
Although the Jefferys owned slaves and traded in slaves, Old Jim, at least,
appears to have been a religious man who read the Bible regularly. To be
sure, however, slavery was teh norm in the South until the 1860's. Many who
were of the Christian faith before that time saw no religious or ethical
contradictions with the institution of slavery."
P. 34:
speaking of Jehoiada Jeffery & Mary:
"Jehoiada and his slaves set themselves to the task of building a large
two-story, cedar log home on the east banck of White River about a mile
above what is now Mount Olive, Arkansas. "
P. 39:
Jehoiada owned a number of slaves which were available to help Mary in
running the household. Mandy, a teen-aged slave girl, was one of the
slaves upon which Mary depended a great deal. mandy slept on a trunnel bed
stored under Mary's bed durign the day and pulled out at night to make room
for Mandy. When Mary's grandson, Isaac, was murdered and robbed by
soldiers of the U. S. Army during the Civil War, she and Mandy took the
team of oxen and a two-wheel cart to carry his body baack to the house from
Pelham Creek where he had been shot."
