Yup Jean,
Same meaning for polecat in my neck of the woods. Strangley my first skunk
experience was a kind of city-fied one. My grandfather's store was next to
the dog-pond (Humane Society facility). The hired help was always coming in
to by snacks and such. So every-day chit-chat was ongoing. One day one of
them told me about this skunk they had just got in. About a year old and
de-odorized. I had always wanted one for a pet but the chase and capture had
a big down-side...namely the amount of 46oz cans of TJ to cleanup after the
capture. SO this ready to take home version seemed the best way to go. What
they didn't know or didn't tell me was the poor thing had been kept caged
since capture at about 8 weeks old, and the kids of the family had
constantly teased it. Luckly I had a pair of WWII gunner's mittens, thick
leather and lined, to handle the toughest little coil-spring of a creature
I've ever dealt with. Bit down on my finger, while I had the gloves on and
still lost the fingernail. Went to feed it one morning and found the corner
of the cage torn apart and Pepe' was gone. 4 or 5 years earlier i had
brought a garter snake with a 90 degree bend near its tail. "Hisser" was
much easier to handle but funny thing, within a couple of days found the
corner of the cage not hooked down and Hisser was gone. I think now, looking
back on it, that grandma was an animal-rights guerilla-activist and was
constantly performing rescues of the poor creatures I was bringing home. Or
was it, that she just couldn't abide a snake in the laundry room. Anyway, I
was pretty much restricted to the usual dog and cat pets (most of the time).
