Suzi,

Joseph Milburn Hodges was my grandfather and according to his death
certificate his mother's name was Martha Jane Ward. I have not been able to
verify this, but it appears that Franklin Pierce Hodges may have been
married to two different Martha's. I also have death certificates for my
grandfather's half-brothers Leland and Franklin. Their mother is listed as
Martha Merkle. The best I can figure is that Franklin and Martha Ward were
in TN when Jesse was born and moved to AR sometime before 1886 when my
grandfather, Joseph was born. My grandfather's mother died when he was
young according to my mother, but she is not sure when. The Martha that
shows up in the census records in 1900 and later is Franklin's second wife
and the mother to my grandfather's half-brothers. i tried to find the
family in the Soundex records for both AR and TN, but they were not listed,
and as we all know, the 1890 census was lost. I hope to make it to Arkansas
to see if ther is something locally about the family.

I had been showing Joseph M Hodges as son of Martha...now that I see the
census record, she is clearly not his mother or Jesse's either.

So, do we know anything about his mother, or have I just not read far
enough?
