A dear friend just gave me about 30 letters written by Elvada's and my
great-grandmother, Nancy Louisa Hager Mayfield, around the end of the 1940's
and a few early in 1950 that I intend to scan (to preserve digitally, of
course). Most of them are written in pencil and the writing has faded so
some places are a little hard to read. I intend to keep them but I'd also
like to be able to have them in a more legible format to share with my
family without having to re-type them all.

Still, nothing can compare to the original document - unless it's an exact
copy.

The lady who gave me the letters is Mary Detrich. Some of you may remember
the article that Jean posted that Mary wrote for the "Ozarks Mountaineer" a
couple of years ago about meeting our great-grandparents and the friendship
she and great-grandma formed. Any of you who don't remember, I'd be happy
to re-post it for you.

the program that reads a documant and then puts it in your word
processing
software is a Opitcal Char. reader program, some are half way good and
others
are very hard to get to work, They cost to much. but if you have alot of
documents that need to be put in the computer , they are nice. I don't
have one to reccommend
as I don't have one to use.
you can check out some of them at http://www.download.com
type in OCR and search it should give you 12 returns, there is some
demo.
and some shareware programs (try before you buy) that you can see if
they work
ok.
Ommipage by scan soft is the top of the line , its $500.00
omnipage wizard is $40.00
The choice is your's , it depends on your system , how fast of a
computer,
what scanner you have , etc,
